Park Meerwijk
Park Meerwijk is a villa park in Bergen
The park was created on the initiative of the Amsterdam tile dealer Arnold Heystee (1876-1941) during the difficult years of the First World War. In 1915 Heystee commissioned J.F. Staal, whom he knew from the Architectura et Amicitia society, who approached four young architects to work with: Margaret Kropholler, his later wife, Cornelis Jouke Blaauw, Guillaume la Croix and Piet Kramer. They were given free rein by Heystee in building seventeen country houses on a specially purchased plot in Bergen: seven detached, two double and two three-part villas. The only condition was that they would make extensive use of Heystees tiles in the interiors. All villas were built between 1917 and 1918.
The villas largely have large thatched roofs with wavy lines, wooden window frames and brick facades and represent the style that was known as the Amsterdam School from 1916 onwards.
