Enkhuizen (0 km)

This historic port town on the IJsselmeer, with a rich VOC past, has much to offer. From Enjoyhotel De Koepoort, you can walk straight into the city centre via the beautiful Westerstraat. With more than 360 national monuments, Enkhuizen is like an open-air museum. Both a city tour and a canal cruise are fun ways to explore this former Zuiderzee town. The beautiful old town has many nice shops and cosy terraces, often overlooking the IJsselmeer or the harbours. During your stay, a visit to the exceptionally beautiful Zuiderzee Museum is an absolute must. And the Flessenscheepjesmuseum (Bottle Ship Museum) is also well worth a visit.

Cycling around Enkhuizen

From Enkhuizen, you can easily discover the versatile West Frisian landscape by bicycle via the extensive network of cycling junctions. The landscape consists of characteristic villages, vast farmlands, mills, historic port towns and views over the IJsselmeer. And did you know you can easily combine boating and cycling here? You can take your bicycle on all ferry services departing from Enkhuizen.

Flessenscheepjesmuseum (1 km)

A special museum is the Flessenscheepjesmuseum in Enkhuizen. This museum is located in a 17-century lock keeper\'s house. It houses the world\'s largest collection of bottle ships of all shapes and sizes, from all parts of the world. Also from different periods, such as from the VOC era. Experience the magic of the little ship in the bottle and discover how it sails to its home port through the bottle neck.

Enkhuizen from the water (1 km)

There are several ways to discover Enkhuizen from the water. Step aboard a canal boat and sail along picturesque harbours and monumental buildings, while learning more about Enkhuizen\'s maritime history. Or take one of the ferries to Stavoren, Urk or Medemblik, for example. And the best thing is, you can bring your bicycle!

Zuiderzee Museum (2 km)

Walk back in time along the cobbled streets of Zuiderzeedorp. More than 140 historical buildings from around the former Zuiderzee form a complete village here. Meet the inhabitants of Urk, visit the cheese warehouse and watch the blacksmith. Hungry for history? Then eat a delicious freshly smoked fish at the fish smokehouse or enjoy something delicious at café Hindeloopen with beautiful views over the IJsselmeer.

Medemblik (19 km)

Medemblik is the oldest and smallest town in West Friesland and, like Enkhuizen, located on the IJsselmeer. The small historic town centre with picturesque streets has nice shops and cosy hospitality establishments. In terms of museums, there is plenty of choice. Experience the magic of times gone by in Radboud Castle, visit the surprising War Museum, taste the atmosphere of yesteryear in the Bakery Museum or explore the beautifully set-up Dutch Steam Engine Museum. Medemblik\'s former train station is the stopping point of the Hoorn-Medemblik museum steam tram.

Hoorn-Medemblik museum steam tram (19 km)

Explore the historical triangle of Enkhuizen-Medemblik-Hoorn with the Museum Steam Tram and the monumental museum ship. Board the classic ferry Friesland in Enkhuizen for a trip across the IJsselmeer to Medemblik. And then travel in the nostalgic steam tram past historic stations from Medemblik to Hoorn. At tram station Hoorn, experience the story of the steam tram in the Netherlands. You can easily travel back from Hoorn to Enkhuizen by NS train. (The steam tram does not run much, if at all, in the winter months)

Hoorn is a fun destination for a day or afternoon trip. In 2024, Hoorn not only gained a Michelin star as a city, but also four tourist attractions. One of these is the Westfries Museum, located in one of many national monuments of this historic port city. The museum tells the story of the cultural history of Hoorn and West Friesland, focusing on the exciting 17th century. For those who love shopping, be sure to visit the atmospheric Hoorn streets. These streets are full of quaint boutiques, artisan shops and speciality shops.
