Open-air museum Het Hoogeland

The open-air museum gives a picture of living and working in the countryside around 1900. About 20 furnished buildings, including a primary school, a village pub, a Jewish butcher's shop and a painting workshop take you back a century. You can still eat and drink in the old village pub. Menkemaborg Museum and Garden

The Menkemaborg is a fully furnished castle with gardens and canals, which together give an impression of life and living in a Groningen borg in the 18th century. The baroque mantelpieces, the imposing bed, the gentlemen's room and the kitchen are very special. Next to the formal garden is a special sundial garden and a fruit garden. The rose tunnel in the vegetable and herb garden blooms in July. To visit the borg, you need to book online, but this is not necessary for the gardens. For more information, go to www.menkemaborg.nl

Museum Mohlman Appingedam

The museum houses three permanent collections: the Canto Collection, the Møhlmann Collection I (works by contemporary realists and figuratives) and the Møhlmann Collection II (works by the painter himself). MuzeeAquarium Delfzijl

Helmantel museum

Henk Helmantel is a Dutch painter. He is counted among the Northern Realists and the Independent Realists. He paints many still lifes and interiors of medieval churches and monasteries. The Helmantel museum is located in Westeremden, 3 kilometres from the hotel. There is currently a new exhibition called ‘Helmantel Home – 35 years of Museum Helmantel’. The Groninger Museum

The Groninger Museum is one of the larger museums in the north of the Netherlands. It manages a multifaceted collection of special treasures from the Stone Age to the present. But what strikes you first is the building itself, which was designed by Italian designer Alessandro Mendini. That alone is worth a visit. Discounted tickets are available at the reception. Borg Ewsum

The deposit area is freely accessible and you can walk through the historic gardens here. At the tearoom in the Koetshuis, you can relax with a cup of special coffee or tea and a regional delicacy. Fraeylemaborg

The Fraeylemaborg is a Groninger borg in the village of Slochteren. The borg is located on an approximately 31 hectare estate, mainly dating from the 19th century. The borg was founded in the Middle Ages as a stone house and grew into an impressive building with influential residents. The last residents, the Thomassen à Thuessink van der Hoop van Slochteren family, sold the borg to the Gerrit van Houten Foundation in 1972. After restoration, the Fraeylemaborg became a museum. The rooms are a reflection of the times up to the middle of the 20th century, the last phase of its private habitation. Borg Verhildersum

The Estate in Leens tells the story of the lives and coexistence of nobility, farmers and workers in the 19th century. The borg is located in the middle of the beautiful estate. Over the centuries, several families have lived there and the borg has undergone multiple changes, both internally and externally. The last residents left in 1953 and now the furnished rooms offer a special insight into life on an estate in the 19th century. The Schathoes restaurant on the estate is an excellent lunch venue. Peter and Paul Church in Loppersum

The construction of the Peter and Paul Church will have started around 1220. Over the years, the church has been further expanded. At the end of the 15th century, the construction of an impressive Gothic-style choir began. The pointed arch windows of the choir allow the light to enter beautifully and accentuate the colours of the paintings and pillars. The construction of the church was not completed until 1529. Most striking is also the monumental organ that, according to a text, was built on the organ in 1562. The builder is not known with certainty. You must make an appointment to visit the church. The Torentje van Spiek

Spijk is one of the most beautiful mound villages in the Netherlands. It is one of the larger villages in the municipality of Delfzijl and has about 1250 inhabitants. The mound was raised on a protruding point in the Fivel and Emsboezem. At the highest point of the mound is the Andreaskerk, also known as the ‘torentje van Spiek’, sung by Ede Staal. This church is surrounded by a beautiful round moat.

Other typical mound villages are include Godlinze, Westeremden, Eenum and Losdorp.

Stormvogel Mill in Loppersum

Within walking distance of the hotel, Molen de Stormvogel is located at the beginning of the Molenweg. The mill was built in 1850, and when the flag is up, you are welcome to enter the mill.

Wadden Coast/Dollard - Noordpolderzijl

From the dyke, you have a beautiful panoramic view over the mudflats and the fishing port. At the entrance of the dyke, near the lock, a monument created with clinkers. On the sea side, blue-grey stripes run across old, red clinkers. The waves symbolise the power of the Wadden Sea. Blue-grey stripes have also been placed on the other side of the lock, but horizontally and on a substrate of new red clinkers. This symbolises the inland polder landscape. 't Zielhoes is located at the foot of the seawall. A nostalgic brown café is located in this former lockkeeper's house.

Noordkaap

The artwork of ‘De Hemelpoort’ marks the precise location of the most northern point of the Dutch mainland. ‘De Hemelpoort’ is an impressive 2.5-metre high gate made of Corten steel.

Noordkaap is about 10 kilometres north of Uithuizermeeden. Signs are placed from the village. Follow the route by car, bicycle or on foot. The last kilometre is only accessible on foot or by bike. It is a fifteen-minute walk to get to the top of the seawall. Next to ‘De Hemelpoort’ is a bench to rest and take in the wide mudflats.

Punt van Reide, peninsula in the Dollard

At the end of the Groningen world lies the Punt van Reide peninsula. This narrow spit of land outside the dykes, measuring 53 hectares, is the remnant of the once prosperous Reiderland. In the course of time, almost the entire original area has been swallowed by the sea. Now nature has free rein: both seabirds and meadow birds thrive in this oasis of peace. Seals can also often be seen lying on the mud flats.

The area is easy to visit from the Dollard Visitor Centre, just below Termunten. The visitor centre provides all kinds of information about the nature reserve. They offer a video presentation about the area, you can view mounted shorebirds up close in the display cases and there are various information panels with explanations.

Eemshaven

One of the most famous ports in Groningen is without a doubt the Eemshaven. Eemshaven is a relatively new port. In 1973, the deep-sea port was officially opened by H.M. Queen Juliana. The port is now rapidly developing into a logistics hub for the shipping routes in Northwest Europe. The Eemshaven has specialised itself as an energy port.

There are three large power stations in the port and a power cable from Norway comes ashore in Eemshaven. An important data cable from America also comes in here, which is linked to the Google data centre located in Eemshaven.

One of the largest modern wind farms is located in the Eemshaven. RWE/Essent has set up a visitor centre in the historic mill “the Goliath”. This imposing port is well worth a visit.

City of Groningen

There is plenty to do in the city of Groningen. The rich history of this Hanseatic city can still be seen in the old town with its beautiful warehouses and many bridges. You can enjoy shopping in the compact centre and you can visit the Forum for a spectacular view of the city. From the roof terrace you have a panoramic view at a height of 45 metres! With good weather and a little luck, you can even see Schiermonnikoog. For more information, visit www.forum.nl.

To get a good view of the city from the water, you can take a nice cruise through the canals. You can buy discounted tickets for Rondvaartbedrijf Kool at the reception.

Port city of Delfzijl

A city with an attractive range of shops and restaurants. A great place to stay and to browse the many shops and enjoy the restaurants and bars. You enter the port through two old water gates. The port offers beautiful views of the marina and the industrial areas beyond.

Historic city of Appingedam

The city of Appingedam is a fifteen-minute drive from the hotel and has a historic centre where you almost feel like you have gone back to old times. The pleasant shopping streets and alleys invite you to discover Appingedam on foot. Many shops offer various products, the bars and restaurants with terraces on the water and museums & galleries are worth a visit. The city is ideally suited to be discovered from the water. Rent a boat and sail by the famous hanging kitchens.

Winsum - Most beautiful village in the Netherlands

The ANWB has named the village of Winsum as the most beautiful village in the Netherlands. The village has 59 national monuments and 4 municipal monuments. Winsum has a mix of iconic buildings such as bridges, mills, churches and village halls. The cosy centre and the port are absolutely worth a visit.

Borkum
