Millingerwaard

The Millingerwaard is the heart of the Gelderse Poort, and the most varied nature development area in the Gelderse Poort  with extensive riparian forests and flowery grasslands. The Gelderse Poort is a nature reserve between the cities of Arnhem, Nijmegen and the German Emmerich and Cleves. A contiguous natural area of dynamic nature, that is the target for the Gelderse Poort.

The WWF has worked in the Gelderse Poort on the return of original river nature, in collaboration with other partners, such as Staatsbosbeheer and Stichting Ark.

The Millinger Tea Garden is located in the middle of the Millingerwaard. The Millinger Tea Garden is special because of its un-Dutch character. The garden exudes an exotic, oriental atmosphere through special plants, such as bananas, palms, figs and other Mediterranean plants, the buildings are also exotic. There is a Moorish tea house with a veranda, a Moroccan-orientated tea house and a Moroccan square with a water feature. Scattered throughout the garden are seating areas where visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea in peace. The garden contains an impressive collection of perennials, including many types of Delphiniums, Hostas, Hermerocallis and Phloxes. Well worth a visit!

Pieterpad

The Pieterpad leads from Pieterburen in North Groningen to Sint-Pietersberg in South Limburg, making it the longest continuous walking route in the Netherlands.

The transition from one area to another is sometimes very sudden and therefore very surprising. For example, the transition from Montferland to the valley of the Rhine and from there again to the hills near Beek and Groesbeek. It is not only the sudden difference in height that affects him, but also flora and fauna, types of houses and farms, everything changes with it.

One of the stages ends in Millingen aan de Rijn. Hotel Millingen aan de Rijn is therefore an ideal place as a stopover during your walking tour.

Walking and cycling

The area invites for walking and cycling. Various maps and routes are available at the reception. Also for a beautiful cycling / walking route through the Ooij polder.

Cities in the area

The German city of Cleves is about a 20-minute drive away. Here you can enjoy shopping.

Places of interest are the Dom Church from the 14th-16th century and Schwanenburg Castle from the 17th century, to which the saga of the Swan Knight Lohengrin is connected.

Nijmegen is also just around the corner (approx. 15 km). Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands, where the Romans lived and Emperor Charlemagne was at home in his castle; he turned Nijmegen into an imperial city. History is not forgotten in the city, but cherished in beautiful historic buildings, parks and museums. From Museum Het Valkhof to Stadsbrouwerij De Hemel and from the Stratemakerstoren to the National Bicycle Museum Velorama. Cozy terraces, modern shopping centers and cozy shops make Nijmegen, with its pleasant southern atmosphere, a city where life is good.
