In recent years, beautiful projects have been created in the city to give Liège a different look. This includes the construction of the Liège-Guillemins station and the combination of smaller museums into beautiful museums with a very complete collection. In addition, many of the beautiful old buildings, churches and cathedrals in the city are being renovated.
De Volmolen
De Volmolen was part of the Vaalser cloth industry in its day. The distance to transport the cloth by horse and carriage from Vaals to Epen and back was no obstacle for the manufacturers. The location of the mill on the Geul had the advantage that a lot of water was available. The possibilities for fulling were limited in the vicinity of Vaals. In the French period, the mill was part of the cloth factory called Charles de Clermont.
De Eper Molen
The beautifully situated Epermolen, or Wingbergermolen, was built in 1884 as a grain mill. This national monument is still in regular use. In earlier times the mill was used for grinding cattle feed, grain and as a dynamo. The water power of the Geul drives the Epermolen, one of the twelve successive, protected watermills on the Geul.
The Geul
The Geul is an idyllic stream that meanders through the landscape. Because the Geul flows rapidly in this part, the water in the outer bends wears away the bank. In the inner bends, the water flows less quickly and the sand and mud that have been carried away is deposited there. As such, there are steep banks in the outer bends and flat banks in the inner bends.
Due to the constant force of the flowing water, the bends become increasingly sharp. This can even go so far as to make the curvy loops touch each other. Then the water chooses the shortest path and the unused loop silts up again. This way, the flow of the Geul shifts through the landscape. The natural course of the Geul makes for a beautiful picture.
Vaals
Vaals: between Aachen and Epen lies the border town of Vaals, known for the Tripoint that is located here. The Tripoint is located on the Vaalserberg, which is the highest mountain in the Netherlands with a height of 322 metres. The area is very suitable for a nice walk through the different countries. Along the way you can enjoy picturesque views of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
