Sint Maartenskerk Wemeldinge

The parish was founded in the 11th century as a daughter church of the Westmonster church in Middelburg, which also had St Martin as its patron saint. The first wooden church was possibly replaced by a stone church as early as the 12th century and is probably the oldest church in Zuid-Beveland. The approximately 25-metre-high church tower was built around 1350. Originally, there were also corner towers, which were demolished in 1607. The church was built on a refuge mound, and notable is the second refuge mound to the east of the church which, at around 11 metres, is the highest in Zeeland. Soon after the construction of the tower, a Gothic three-aisled church was built, which was raised and brought under one roof around 1411. The choir, nave, south aisle and sacristy date from the 15th century.

The beach of Wemeldinge

The beach at Wemeldinge is not very big, but very beautifully situated. Behind the Promenade, on the Eastern Scheldt, near the village marina.

At high tide, it therefore largely disappears. In the nearby village of Wemeldinge, there is plenty to see and do. The modern marina is located next to the beach.
